And so the soap opera continues…

New York Racing Association President and COO Ellen McClain announced Jan. 25 that she is resigning from her role, and board leaders said they would immediately begin a national search to find a replacement.

“I look forward to working with you during a transition period,” McClain told the NYRA board during an open meeting. She had replaced Charles Hayward, who was fired during last year’s takeout betting scandal that cost bettors millions of dollars. McClain, who also serves as chief operating officer, was not the Cuomo administration’s choice to remain on as the leader of NYRA, administration officials said last year. The state took control of the franchise last year during a three-year reorganization period.

A transitional, two-year funding agreement reached with the government of Ontario will see Woodbine reduce Thoroughbred race dates by 14.7% in 2013 but will allow the track near Toronto to offer average daily purses comparable to 2012.

Woodbine Entertainment Group announced Jan. 24 it plans to offer 133 Thoroughbred dates at Woodbine, which would be 23 fewer race days than offered last year. Last year’s average purses per race date were $508,722 (U.S.) and Woodbine officials said this year’s average daily purses would be comparable to that figure.

Turfway Park has elected to pick up the option to add four racing days to its February schedule. The track, home of the Spiral Stakes, will conduct race cards on all four Fridays and Saturdays in February.

“Our decision to race these dates was influenced by our continued strong field size, the response to our Friday night events, and the horsemen’s preference to maintain the continuity of racing rather than take the two-week break,” said General Manager Chip Bach.
