Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Hialeah is one of the most beautiful tracks in the country.

Hialeah Keeps Thoroughbred Options Open

Hialeah Park has told Florida regulators that it plans to hold its next Quarter Horse meet Dec. 13, 2013 through Feb.17, 2014.

The 40 racing days that owner and chairman John Brunetti expects to be approved will be exclusively for Quarter Horses.

But Brunetti said Jan. 3 the track might amend its filing with the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering and hold some Thoroughbred races beginning July 1, 2013. That would be the first Thoroughbred racing at Hialeah since 2001.

In its preliminary filing for racing dates, Calder Casino & Race Course told the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering it plans no change in its racing schedule for the 12 months beginning July 1, 2013.

Calder’s filing, dated Dec. 26 and received Dec. 28, shows 150 dates that would continue its early April through late November schedule of the past two years. It is the first filing in a likely battle between Calder and Gulfstream Park over racing dates in southeast Florida.

Santa Anita is off to the races in trying to draw new customers

The numbers dwindle each year for Santa Anita Park. So how can the horse racing track draw more new customers?

As Santa Anita opens its winter-spring meeting Wednesday, it remains a breathtaking venue in Arcadia set against the San Gabriel Mountains.

But attendance and on-track wagering at Santa Anita have declined for more than 20 years, as they have at many tracks.

The main reasons: competition since the mid-1980s from state lotteries, Indian casinos and off-track betting, that is, people at other facilities and online making “simulcast” or “satellite” bets on Santa Anita’s races. The weak economy also worsened matters.

The jostling crowd surges forward, camera phones held high to catch a glimpse of the superstar flanked by a dense entourage.

But it’s not an A-list actor or musician throwing the fans into a frenzy. Instead, a four-year-old horse called Frankel is about to make history by winning his 14th — and final — consecutive race.

A sold-out crowd of 32,500 people watched Frankel win Champions Day at Ascot in October — the highest number for an autumn flat racing event in Britain.
