INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Betfair Hollywood Park officials told the California Horse Racing Board that they can’t commit to racing next fall.

The board asked track officials to commit to staging its spring-summer meet from late April to mid-July 2013 and its fall meet in November and December 2013, but Hollywood Park President Jack Liebau says they can’t commit to the fall meet that far in advance.

Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to become a hurricane as it moves into the northern Gulf of Mexico, has forced a pair of tracks to cancel races. Both Fair Grounds and Calder have announced cancellations over several days.

Fair Grounds Race Course declared a mandatory evacuation of its barn area in advance of Tropical Storm Isaac. All four days of live racing scheduled for this week, Wednesday to Saturday, have been canceled.

Nevada’s sports books were taking bets on horse races Friday from tracks nationwide after the state’s Off-Track Pari-Mutuel Wagering Committee and Las Vegas Dissemination Co. reached a deal on a new seven-year contract.

Nevada gaming regulators were urging both sides to reach a deal to avert a shutdown that threatened to take effect as early as Friday. There are 80 sports books in Nevada that offer pari-mutuel wagering, according to the Nevada Pari-Mutuel Association.

The Fairplex Park meet begins its 74th season Sept. 7 and will run through Sept. 23, featuring 12 stakes with purses totaling $750,000, an increase over the $652,700 in purses distributed for 11 stakes run during the 2011 meet.

The 13-day meet coincides with the Los Angeles County Fair that runs Aug. 31-Sept. 30 in Pomona, Calif.

Thistledown requested 122 live racing days.

With one exception, there could be little change in live racing dates at Ohio tracks in 2013, but significant alterations are possible for 2014 should more facilities begin operating video lottery terminals.

The Ohio State Racing Commission Aug. 22 acknowledged receipt of applications for racing dates, but historically, schedules aren’t finalized for months because of sometimes-contentious negotiations between racetracks and horsemen’s groups.

Oaklawn Park’s 2013 live meeting will be the richest in the Arkansas track’s 109-year history. Purses will total close to $20 million during the 56-day season, Jan. 11-April 13.

Oaklawn officials announced a record $5.7-million stakes schedule for next year several weeks ago.The most lucrative condition book in the track’s history will feature maiden allowance races at $53,000; open allowance races as high as $56,000, and increases in key categories as high as 50% when compared to the first condition book of the 2012 season.

“We need to clean this up,” Papen (D-Las Cruces) told Capitol Report New Mexico. “We don’t need to be known as a crooked horse racing state. Horse racing is too important in this state.”

Benefiting from several exotic wager carryovers, handle at Del Mar soared during the five days ending Aug. 19 and remains well ahead of last year at the same point in the boutique meet.

With a $362,503 carryover in the 50-cent Pick Five and a $240,680 boost to the Pick Six to start the week and a large two-day Pick Six carryover of $442,770 to end the week, on-track wagering rose 26% during the five days.
