New York’s racetracks say they contributed more in various tax and revenue-sharing funding during the first six months of the year than the casinos on the Las Vegas strip and Atlantic City combined. The New York Gaming Association, which represents nine tracks with VLT casinos, says its facilities since January contributed $620 million in state taxes, state Lottery Division payments, and various revenue-sharing pots, including purses.

Attendance, on-track handle, and total handle all posted gains over 2011 totals as 25,676 turned out for opening day of the 144th meeting at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York July 20.

Attendance was up 2.1% from 25,155 in 2011. On-track handle for the 10-race card totaled $4,075,817, up 14.8% from $3,551,745 on opening day in 2011.

Wagering downstate at the Belmont Café and Aqueduct simulcast center was $459,648 for a combined on-track handle of $4,535,465, up 14.6% from $3,959,128 last year.

A New York appeals court has unanimously upheld the revocation of trainer Rick Dutrow’s license by state racing regulators—a major setback for the colorful trainer’s ability to keep working in the state.

Just a day before the opening of the Saratoga summer meet, the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court said July 19 the state Racing and Wagering Board’s revocation of Dutrow’s license was legally justified and based on a claim that he had “engaged in conduct that was improper and inconsistent with the public interest and the best interests of racing.”

Delaware Park cancelled its live racing program for Wednesday, July 18 due to extreme heat forcast for the region.Wednesday’s weather forecast for Wilmington, Delaware calls for a high temperature of 97 degrees, with an excessive heat warning in effect until 6 a.m. EDT Thursday. Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission Chief Veterinarian Dr. John T. Peters reccomended the cancellation, saying that racing under such conditions would pose substantial health risk to horses, riders, and participants.

Massachusetts gaming commissioners are hoping to crack down on booze-binging jockeys and doped-up horses as they assume regulatory responsibility over the state’s horse racing industry.

“There have been a number of positives,” said commissioner Gayle Cameron, referring to racehorses on the juice. “There are fines and penalties enforced today. We don’t have information that it’s a larger problem here than anywhere else.”

But the Massachusetts Gaming Commission announced a number of steps to keep drugs and alcohol off the track. The state’s drug policy and penalties for horses will line up with that of the Racing Medication & Testing Consortium and the Association of Racing Commissioners International.
