Technology aims to revolutionize horse racing

Students in the UA Race Track Industry Program and the College of Engineering have created a prototype product intended to allow horse racing to be viewed from a camera embedded in the helmet of a jockey.

Kenleigh Hobby and David Matt, seniors in the College of Agriculture’s Race Track Industry Program, began looking for ways to improve the industry as part of a senior project and saw a need for improved technology in streaming video of the races.

Dullahan Looks To Turn Tables On ‘Another’

“Our horse showed up as we knew he would in the Derby,” noted Crawford, an Iowa-based attorney and lifelong horse enthusiast who also campaigned grade I winner and stallion Paddy O’Prado  . “When you put a horse out on the track in a 20-horse field, crazy things can happen that keep you from being able to win the race. It’s pretty simple.”

Dullahan will be one of the noted contenders seeking to deprive I’ll Have Another of the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) June 9 at Belmont Park, and Crawford is anxious for the rematch and a chance for vindication for his charge, who is owned by 20-24 partners, many of them friends of Crawford’s. Having skipped the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), Dullahan figures to represent a major threat along with fellow Derby runner Union Rags, who also passed the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Belmont race caller readies for history in making

NEW YORK (AP) — If I’ll Have Another becomes horse racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner and first in 34 years on Saturday in the Belmont Stakes, he’ll take Larry Collmus into the history books with him.

The chestnut colt’s attempt to accomplish the feat will be called for television by Collmus, who will have about 2 minutes, 30 seconds to describe the action as the 1 1/2-mile race unfolds. I’ll Have Another and his 10 potential rivals have never run that far in their 3-year-old lives, and Collmus has little experience calling a race at that distance.

Pari-mutuel wagering down slightly in May
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2012/06/04/pari-mutuel-wagering-down-slightly-in-may.aspx

If I’ll Have Another has spurred interest in racing with his victories in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1), it is not showing up in the total pari-mutuel wagering figures.

Thoroughbred racing economic indicators for May show wagering dropped slightly in the month to $1,159,360,490, down 0.34% compared with the same month last year despite a 2.75% increase in race days to 523. For the year, wagering is up 1.5% to $4,708,541,276 with 1,939 race days in the first five months of both 2011 and 2012.

President Clinton thinks Dullahan can spoil Another Triple Crown bid – New York Post

What’s better than having Bubba in your corner heading to Saturday’s Belmont Stakes?

During a visit to the Meadowlands on Friday night, former President Bill Clinton endorsed Dullahan as the horse that can upset I’ll Have Another in his quest for the Triple Crown.

“It looked like [I’ll Have Another] had some juice left at the end of both those races,” Clinton said. “But the real wild card is the horse that finished third in the Derby. The Irish name? Dullahan. He didn’t run in the Preakness because they were saving him. The Belmont might be a good race for him because he closed just as strong as I’ll Have Another, and he came out of maybe more interference.

O’Neill sharpens strategy for I’ll Have Another
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2012/06/02/oneill-sharpens-strategy-for-ill-have-another.aspx

Trainer Doug O’Neill continued to find little wrong with Triple Crown hopeful I’ll Have Another on Saturday as the colt took to a sloppy, sealed track for his morning jog at Belmont Park. O’Neill was pleased with I’ll Have Another’s exercise during the specially allotted time for Belmont Stakes (G1) contenders. The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) winner jogged to the backstretch alongside his usual companion, retired millionaire and stable pony Lava Man, before breaking into a one-mile gallop under exercise rider Jonny Garcia.

Donegal Racing’s Dullahan, the Kentucky Derby third-place finisher who will be seeking to block I’ll Have Another’s Triple Crown bid, breezed a mile at Churchill Downs the morning of May 26.

With Tammy Fox aboard for trainer Dale Romans, the son of Even the Score   was timed in 1:43 for the mile. According to the Churchill communications department, the fractional splits were :26, :38 3/5, :51 2/5, 1:04 3/5, and 1:17 2/5 for three-quarters of a mile.

I’ll Have Another trainer to be suspended after Belmont
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/horseracing/12771825-419/ill-have-another-trainer-to-be-suspended-after-belmont.html

Despite vigorously denying he gave one of his horses an illegal performance-enhancing mixture, trainer Doug O’Neill was suspended 45 days — a ban that won’t take effect until after his superstar colt, I’ll Have Another, tries to win the Triple Crown.

After a nearly two-year legal battle, California racing officials agreed with O’Neill but still found fault because of a rule that says trainers are ultimately responsible for horses in their care.

The ruling Thursday doesn’t prevent O’Neill from saddling his Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

No Nasal Strip, No Problem, O’Neill Says
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/70062/no-nasal-strip-no-problem-oneill-says

An equipment change for I’ll Have Another will be noted in the program for the 144th Belmont Stakes (gr. I) June 9. The son of Flower Alley   will attempt to become the 12th Triple Crown winner without the aid of a nasal strip, which he has worn in each of his seven previous races.

New York is the only state that bans nasal strip use. The prohibition does not come from the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, which approved their use in October 1999 and allows nasal strips to be used in Standardbred racing.
