California simply needs a better product: This drop in handle shows that the market is not buying the short-field product.

Total handle — the amount wagered on horse racing in California and bet in other racing jurisdictions and merged into state pools — declined by more than $537 million over the previous year, according the California Horse Racing Board’s annual fiscal report.

The total dipped to $2.90 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, a 15.6% drop from the preceding 12 month’s total of $3.44 billion. Total pari-mutuel handle has plummeted by nearly $1.5 billion since 2007-08, when about $4.39 billion was wagered.

Six years after Barbaro, trainer Michael Matz has another star attraction for the Kentucky Derby.

Union Rags confirmed his status as the Derby front-runner with an impressive four-length victory in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes over the weekend at Gulfstream Park.

The win in his 3-year-old debut comes nearly four months after the colt’s lone defeat — by a head to Hansen in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5.

Interesting, and encouraging,  that this would be on the table with all the doom and gloom about  thoroughbred racing.

A measure authorizing a constitutional amendment on expanded gambling in Kentucky was defeated by the state Senate on a 21-16 vote the afternoon of Feb. 23. One senator was absent.

The measure would have authorized up to seven casinos in the state had it made it through the General Assembly. It was largely opposed by Republicans even though its primary sponsor, Sen. Damon Thayer, is a Republican who worked closely with Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear in bipartisan fashion.
