A very challenging article. The writer’s view on a talent-centric approach for racing is interesting.

The Jockey Club Round Table

At this year’s Jockey Club Round Table, I hoped to hear the McKinsey & Company presentation say, “We discovered Thoroughbred racing is facility-centric. When you change and develop a talent-centric structure, you will have a growing, powerful sport.” That did not happen. Although they advise the NBA, NFL and other talent-centric sports, McKinsey never mentioned the benefits of racing developing the same structure. McKinsey warned that racing has not bottomed out. If nothing changes over the next 10 years, racehorse owners alone will see a 50% loss in revenue. For breeders, auction companies and support service companies, that news about horse ownership is devastating.

Horse racing needs help, new sources of revenues
http://www.app.com/article/20110911/NJOPINION02/309110016/Horse-racing-needs-help-new-sources-of-revenues

There is a path to recovery for New Jersey’s $1 billion horse racing industry —which employs 13,000 individuals and ensures the preservation of 176,000 acres of horse farmland — if Gov. Chris Christie would just get off his high horse and see the irreparable damage his tough love is reaping on the industry.

Unfortunately, horse racing is not at a crossroad; it’s at a tipping point, from which it will not recover when it falls.

Horse racing needs new sources of gambling revenues — and help is on its way. This November, voters will be asked to approve my ballot initiative for sports betting at our casinos and racetracks.

If successful, takeout reductions could be requested for other wagers, said Erich Zimny, director of racing operations at Charles Town. Officials said takeout rates never have varied since Charles Town opened in 1933.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will pay its horsemen a record under-payment amount in excess of $1-million following the conclusion of its 37-day race meeting on Wednesday.

The payment, which will see owners receive at least an additional 8% on top of their overnight purse earnings during the seven-week session, was realized because of record purses, good field size and solid wagering numbers during the track’s 72nd season.

No cash

A woman who claimed to be five months pregnant was arrested Sunday after being caught trying to break into a Phoenix horse racing track through the ceiling.

The woman had two accomplices with her, but it was decided she would be the best candidate to crawl into the attic and down through the ceiling to get to the money room at the track, police told myFOXphoenix.com.

The woman was crawling along the beams between the ceiling tiles, before the business opened Sunday, when an employee heard a loud crash.
