Dialed In has a chance to become The Six Million Dollar Horse.

A win in the $1 million Preakness Stakes (gr. I) on May 21 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore would net Dialed In a $5.5 million bonus, in addition to the $600,000 winner’s share.
Dialed In is eligible for the bonus thanks to earlier 2011 victories in the Holy Bull (gr. III) and the Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park. MI Developments, parent company of Pimlico and Gulfstream, put up the bonus.

Monmouth opens with purses similar to 2009 – Thoroughbred Times

Compared to the 2010 Elite Summer Meet that was billed as offering $50-million over 50 days, Monmouth Park will look a lot more like 2009 with the start of a new meet on Saturday that is clouded with ongoing negotiations for a new racetrack operator.

Monmouth will distribute $471,000 in the 11-race card that attracted 82 entries (7.45 per race), topped by the $75,000 Decathlon Stakes for older males at six furlongs.

Nearly every conceivable measure of racetrack business increased year-over-year during the Tampa Bay Downs 2010-2011 live meeting, including record total handle for a second consecutive year.

Tampa Bay Downs concluded its 90-day meet on May 7 with total handle of $411,484,853, an 8% increase versus the 2009-2010 record of $380,988,872. Simulcast wagering on Tampa Bay races, handle per race, and number of turf races also all established records.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Animal Kingdom ruled over 18 other 3-year-olds in the Kentucky Derby Saturday, and it looks as if he’ll face another large field May 21 in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. But the composition of the two fields will be in stark contrast, as no more than four of the 18 horses Animal Kingdom defeated in the 137th Derby likely will come back for the second leg of the Triple Crown.
Most notable among Animal Kingdom’s challengers will be Dialed In, who finished eighth as the favorite in the Derby and will be shooting for a $5.5 million bonus in the Preakness. Mucho Macho Man, who was third Saturday, and Shackleford, who was fourth, also are expected. Santiva, who was sixth, is possible.

When 163,628 people flooded Churchill Downs for the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby almost 40 years ago, many horse-racing enthusiasts thought it was a record that might never be broken — particularly after the track added a turf course in the mid-1980s that took away more than 200,000 square feet of infield.

Yet that record was shattered Saturday when America’s greatest horse race, which drew an estimated 10,000 at its first running in 1875, packed in 164,858 around that same dirt oval.

New perspectives: An inspiring Derby experience – Thoroughbred Times

For years, I have heard that horse racing is a dying sport. I am told that unlike me, people have no interest in horse racing, and that we are in the throes of extinction. Yes, we are facing consolidation in the sport today, but record crowds, beautiful horses and top-class events are a great time to inspire new fans and owners.
