Massachusetts gaming commissioners are hoping to crack down on booze-binging jockeys and doped-up horses as they assume regulatory responsibility over the state’s horse racing industry.
“There have been a number of positives,” said commissioner Gayle Cameron, referring to racehorses on the juice. “There are fines and penalties enforced today. We don’t have information that it’s a larger problem here than anywhere else.”
But the Massachusetts Gaming Commission announced a number of steps to keep drugs and alcohol off the track. The state’s drug policy and penalties for horses will line up with that of the Racing Medication & Testing Consortium and the Association of Racing Commissioners International.
