Gulfstream Casino: Why No One Cares About Horse Racing Anymore (It’s Boring …

This is a very pessimistic view of thoroughbred horse racing. I often wonder what can be done to change this perception

Gulfstream Casino: Why No One Cares About Horse Racing Anymore (It’s Boring …

Yep, we’re all f**ked.

On Saturday, something seemingly wrought from a time forgotten will emerge and rumble down the track at Gulfstream Casino to the delight of almost no one.

Today, we bear witness to the fetid remains of a once-proud sport: horseracing. Yes, the sport will ultimately limp on, but it will do so within the confines of nostalgia — like newspapers. And yes, there’s nearly $1 million up for grabs on December 1 at our local Claiming Crown race, but forgive us if that doesn’t elicit great enthusiasm.

That’s because watching horseracing is boring.

Yes, boring.

There’s no other way to break this down. If we’re to watch sports — and we do, reader, we do — we like to like to watch something that offers escape from the tedium of existence, not intensifies it. Which means: We don’t like waiting through hours of vapid commentary by random schmucks for a race that takes exactly one to three minutes. Snnnnoooozeee.

Timeline for NYRA Tote Operator Delayed

A move to name a new tote operator at the New York Racing Association was put off until at least the end of next summer’s Saratoga meet, a state government oversight panel decided in Albany Nov. 26.

The Franchise Oversight Board, which is now overseeing the finances of what last month became a state-run racing entity with the appointment of a new government-dominated NYRA board, approved a resolution to keep United Tote as NYRA’s totalizator contractor. The oversight panel a month ago approved a 30-day extension for United Tote while state officials studied the new proposed contract.

Another problem for horse racing: fewer foals
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20121126/news/711269941/

SPRINGFIELD — As gamblers place fewer bets at Arlington Park and prize money drops for winning horses, the effects are felt far from the track.

The number of thoroughbred horses born in Illinois has been dropping steadily, to 429 this year from 1,009 in 2006, according to the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

“There’s no future in it in this state at this point,” said Frank Kirby, an Oak Brook breeder.

With fewer horses, industry experts say, come lost jobs for trainers and groomers, a smaller demand for hay and other economic effects that are felt across the state.

That’s one of the arguments driving the push to allow tracks like Arlington Park to install slot machines to bring in more revenue. Lawmakers returning to Springfield this week could try yet again to make that happen.

“This was a business decision by the (fair board), and while we know there will be some impact to the horse industry, it is not in the best interest of Tulsa County citizens to continue live racing at Fair Meadows,” County Commissioner and fair board Chairman Fred Perry said in a news release.

The fair board on Nov. 1 approved a naming rights agreement with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation that will pay the county’s Expo Square $1.4 million a year.

As part of the agreement, the fair board agreed to end live racing at Fair Meadows – a decision that will take millions of dollars in purse money from racetracks across the state.

Fair Grounds will once again renew a beloved New Orleans tradition dating back to 1898 when the 141st Thoroughbred racing season opens on Thanksgiving Day. First post for Thursday’s 10-race holiday program is 11 a.m. (CST).

Fair Grounds is generally accepted to be the third-oldest racetrack in the country, although many accounts, including a heavily researched 2006 feature in The Times-Picayune by Bob Fortus, contend that Fair Grounds could be at least the second-oldest, if not the oldest.
