When 163,628 people flooded Churchill Downs for the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby almost 40 years ago, many horse-racing enthusiasts thought it was a record that might never be broken — particularly after the track added a turf course in the mid-1980s that took away more than 200,000 square feet of infield.

Yet that record was shattered Saturday when America’s greatest horse race, which drew an estimated 10,000 at its first running in 1875, packed in 164,858 around that same dirt oval.
