The quality of the Not Ready for First Saturday in May Players is mocked by Ray Kerrison in the New York Post, who states, “The slowest bunch of horses in 20 years are set to go in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, turning America’s greatest horse race into a bettor’s dream or, depending on your luck, nightmare.” Ed McNamara for Newsday has similar questions about the field. He writes: “Saturday will bring Derby No. 137, and if you think you have a sure thing after a bizarre series of prep races, you’re either a genius or delusional. If you bet the favorite in the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass and the Santa Anita, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and Illinois Derbys, you went 0-for-7.”
