Turfway Park Cancels Feb. 1 Card

With wind chill temperatures in the single digits forecast for the evening racing hours, Turfway Park has canceled live racing for Friday, Feb. 1.  Racing is expected to resume at the Northern Kentucky track as scheduled at 1:10 p.m. EST Saturday, Feb. 2.

The New York Senate's top Republican wants Belmont Park to be included in the list of possible casino expansion locations. “Belmont is one of the areas with no (video lottery terminals) unlike the other tracks, and that has to be part of the discussion,” Senate co-leader Dean Skelos, a Nassau County Republican, said Jan. 30 after emerging from a private negotiating session with top state officials on the casino matter.

Mountaineer Meet to Begin with 10% Purse Hike

Calling them the “worst deadbeats,” the Jockeys’ Guild has put out a list of 10 track operators it says are most insensitive to jockey health and safety issues but a representative of the first track on the list disputes the characterization. The Guild’s volley, the latest move in a long debate on how medical benefits should be funded, follows discussion of the issue at its annual assembly completed Jan. 29. The Guild put the list out Jan. 31 and called on track owners to support rider health benefits.

SPRINGFIELD — Two companies that had been allowing Illinoisans to bet on horse races online have stopped, according to the state’s Racing Board.

The Daily Herald reported last month that the companies’ licenses were invalid because a state law legalizing online gambling on races expired Jan. 1. The companies had been taking bets, anyway.

Overnight purses will increase 10% when Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort begins its almost 10-month racing season March 1.

Rose Mary Williams, director of racing at the West Virginia track, said Jan. 29 the hike is possible because of “cash in the purse account” as well as 2013 schedule in which nine races instead of 10 will be run each night from March through August.

Now that Churchill Downs has turned the Illinois Derby into a dead end street on its new Road to the Kentucky Derby series, Hawthorne Race Course is trying to remake it into a superhighway to the Preakness.

Hawthorne has increased the purse of the Chicago circuit’s premier main track race for 3-year-olds from $500,000 to $750,000 and will run it April 20, two weeks before the Kentucky Derby and four weeks before the Preakness.

Legislation authorizing use of mobile devices for betting on horse races was signed into law by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie Jan. 28.

The law allows the New Jersey Racing Commission to promulgate rules and regulations to allow the use of mobile gaming devices by patrons at in-state racetracks. Patrons can wager on New Jersey races as well as those imported via simulcast from out-of-state tracks, the law states.
