The racing industry received a bit of good news on the pari-mutuel front on Thursday as average daily handle improved in July this year compared with July 2009.

According to Thoroughbred racing economic indicators released on Thursday by Equibase Co., bettors wagered an average of $1,633,404 on each of the 630 racing days offered by tracks in July. That average is up 1.3% from the $1,612,245 wagered on the 651 racing cards offered in July ’09.

Still, with cuts in racing dates, total wagering on U.S. races declined 1.96% in July to $1,029,044,785. U.S. race days were down 3.23% in July and down 5.51% for the year to 3,274. Despite these cuts, average daily wagering on each card also had been declining until July’s slight uptick. For the year, average daily wagering per card is down 1.72% to $2,142,531.

For the first seven months of 2010, total wagering is down 7.14% to $7,014,646,777. For the year, purses are down 4.66% to $586,063,923. Purses were down in July 0.5% to $109,492,833 with average daily purses up 2.74% to $173,798.
