Prominent California Thoroughbred owner and breeder John Harris, whose Fresno County cattle farm trucking center was attacked by militant animal rights activists Jan. 8, warns that the group claiming responsibility could also pose a threat to horse operations.

Fourteen vehicles — tractors and several big rigs used for cattle hauling — from the Harris Ranch Beef Co. fleet were reportedly destroyed in the arson attack. As part of its plans to ultimately build a full-service casino resort at the Aqueduct racetrack — along with a massive convention center — gambling giant Genting has been in discussions with state officials to shut down horse racing at the site. In exchange, the company is offering to augment the racing facilities at nearby Belmont racetrack, according to people familiar with the discussions.

As part of the plan, Genting is seeking to redevelop portions of Belmont and “winterize” the track, allowing horses to safely race there in the winter. That could mean moving the grandstand, among other investments, the people said.

Horse Racing Could Be on Menu in New Jersey
http://www.onlinecasinoreports.com/news/theheadlines/2012/1/5/horse-racing-could-be-on-menu-in-new-jersey.php

The State Senate and Assembly committees will on consider today (Thursday) legislation that would create a pilot program in New Jersey’s northern countries and part of Ocean County, which would allow electronic wagering terminals to be placed at venues that also serve food and alcohol.
If the measure is passed, a limited number of bars and restaurants will be given licenses to create mini-off-track wagering sites, which would enable customers to place bets on horse races that are run at state-owned tracks. The current law already provides for 15 OTW facilities, but this would expand them significantly.
