Horse of the Year candidate Rapid Redux successfully extended his unbeaten streak to 22 with a front-running victory Wednesday at Laurel Park. Earlier in the day it was announced that the six- year-old gelding is to be honored with a Special Eclipse Award.

Rapid Redux, owned by Robert Cole, posted his first win of 2012 and record 22nd consecutive victory. Trained by David Wells, the gelding was ridden by J.D. Acosta in a $17,000 one-mile starter allowance versus four challengers after three horses were scratched.

Rapid Redux, who has not lost a race since Nov. 18, 2010, can extend his record for consecutive wins to 22 in a $17,000 starter-allowance race on Laurel Park’s opening day card Wednesday.

The gelding is the 3-5 morning line favorite. However, trainer David Wells said Tuesday afternoon that his stable star several days ago sustained a little cut on the back of his right front foot, known as “grabbing a quarter.”

Article: NYRA’s Hayward says takeout reduction permanent – ESPN

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

As egregious as NYRA’s error is, what should serve as a wake up call to all fans of horse racing is the obscenely high takeout charged day in and day out.  Two choices here, as I see it: Stick to insisting on value investments only, be very selective, or shop for other racing jurisdictions with lower takeouts.

NYRA’s Hayward says takeout reduction permanent – ESPN
http://espn.go.com/horse-racing/story/_/id/7394206/nyra-hayward-says-takeout-reduction-permanent

OZONE PARK, N.Y. — Though he admitted that there were others who could have discovered it, New York Racing Association president and CEO Charles Hayward on Tuesday took responsibility for the mistake that led to NYRA charging too high a takeout rate on certain wagers for a 15-month period, an error that cost bettors $7.9 million.

It was revealed last week that NYRA had improperly charged a takeout rate of 26 percent — 1 percentage point higher than allowed by law — on exotic wagers, including trifectas, superfectas, pick threes, pick fours, and the grand slam — from Sept. 15, 2010 through Dec. 18, 2011.

Hayward clarified that the pick six wager was not impacted by this overcharge because state law allows NYRA to charge a takeout rate of up to 36 percent on that wager.

As an attempt to rectify the situation, NYRA on Wednesday instituted a 2 percentage point decrease on the takeout rate on the wagers in question. Hayward said the takeout reduction on those wagers would be permanent and not for only 15 months as had been reported by some outlets.

Good news for racing…

Santa Anita Opener Biggest in Years | BloodHorse.com

A crowd of 44,579 thronged to Santa Anita for its opening-day card Dec. 26, the largest since 1994. An hour after The Factor won the Malibu Stakes (gr. I), last race on the card, the traffic still clogged the surface streets surrounding the racetrack, a rare event in recent years.

On-track handle hit $4,246,751.90, an increase of 10% over the 2010 figure of $3,851,594. All-sources handle was $12,866,300.60, up 9% from last year’s $11,707,276. Total attendance, including California’s ITW sites, was 54,439.

Article: NYRA Takeout Error Missed by Other Agencies | BloodHorse.com

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

15 months?  Shocking. Not just a ‘public relations’ issue as they’d like to think, but an 15 month error that has the potential to undermine bettor confidence.

NYRA Takeout Error Missed by Other Agencies | BloodHorse.com
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/66701/nyra-takeout-error-missed-by-other-agencies

Just days after being praised by state officials for their fiscal openness, officials with the New York Racing Association were enduring a new round of criticism after revelations it had been overcharging bettors on exotic wagers.

The mistake went on for 15 months, during which time NYRA charged a 26% pari-mutuel takeou trate on certain exotic bets, such as trifectas and Pick 3s, instead of the allowed 25%. State racing officials had approved the higher level several years ago, but the rate was supposed to have been lowered by NYRA late last year.

The error went unnoticed by different layers of state regulatory bodies. It was caught recently by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli during an audit not of NYRA — which is under a regular fiscal watch by the comptroller — but during a formal review of the finances of the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund.
