NEW YORK — The rematch is almost set.

With Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom a go for the Belmont Stakes in two weeks, attention shifts to whether Preakness winner Shackleford will run in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

For now, Shackleford’s trainer Dale Romans isn’t committing, but said Friday the colt will be shipped from Churchill Downs to Belmont Park next week and that’s when the decision will be made.

Now that we’ve gone 33 years since the last Triple Crown winner, it’s time to ask some serious questions. What’s it going to take for a 3-year-old to step up and become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes?

Shorten the distances? A little more time between the three races?

Not if you ask Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who’s won nine Triple Crown races, including three Derbies. He thinks everything is fine, except one major factor. Baffert believes the Derby needs to be limited to 14 horses, not the 20 that are currently allowed to enter the starting gate.

Developer Rick Caruso has backed out of a stalled plan to build an outdoor mall in the Santa Anita Park parking lot.

The project announced in 2004 has faced repeated obstacles, including opposition from the adjacent Westfield Santa Anita mall and the bankruptcy of Santa Anita’s former parent company, Magna Entertainment Corp., which nullified Caruso’s agreement to partner in the development.

The latest betting craze in horse racing —— the 50-cent Pick 5 and its low takeout —— appears to be coming to the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club this summer.

Track president Craig Fravel said recently that a decision would come in “the next 10 days.”

“It looks like we probably will (add it),” Fravel said, “but we haven’t made a final decision. We’ll analyze the results from Hollywood Park, sit down with the TOC (Thoroughbred Owners of California) and come up with a plan and a final decision.”
