The fall of horse racing: is more really, well, more? – Washington Examiner (blog)

It’s a tough question for horse racing enthusiasts: is subsidizing Maryland racing just ignoring the real issue? Sure we all love those iconic images from horse racing’s heyday when tracks were the hot place to be and the clubhouse at Pimlico in Baltimore was teeming with society’s elites

Hilarious! 2001: Preakness and the rapture, it seems, are the same day – baltimoresun.com

Since then I have tried a variety of betting schemes, and this year I am relying on information gleaned from predictions of the rapture to make my Preakness Stakes picks. Both events are scheduled to unfold Saturday, so there seems to be some sort of harmonic convergence in the air.

The rapture, as described by Harold Camping, the head of the Family Radio broadcasting network and chief alarm bell ringer of this apocalypse, is the first step in a two part process that wipes out the universe. The first stage, May 21, 2011, is also referred to by Mr. Camping as Judgment Day, when true believers will be transported into the sweet hereafter. Here in Baltimore, that date is known as Preakness Saturday, when about 100,000 fun seekers try to transport themselves into sweet oblivion.

Preakness, Pimlico must look past ‘temporary fix’ – SI.com
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/horse_racing/wires/05/20/2080.ap.rac.preakness.future.1026/

BALTIMORE (AP) – Esteemed trainer Bob Baffert always looks forward to making his once-a-year trip to Pimlico Race Course.

“It’s my favorite leg of the whole Triple Crown. I love the Preakness,” he said this week. “They just roll out the red carpet for you here.”

Unfortunately for Pimlico, Baffert is not unlike most horse racing fans in Maryland. He shows up for the Preakness, but during the rest of the year he’s got other places to go.

Thanks heavily to intervention by Gov. Martin O’Malley and the Maryland legislature, the Preakness will remain a fixture at Old Hilltop for years to come. The financially strapped horse racing industry, which was in danger of collapsing from lack of interest, will be subsidized over the next three years by money made from state slot machines, according to legislation signed by the governor Thursday.

Article: At Racing’s Poker Table, Owners and Breeders Are the Marks – NYTimes.com

Fascinating article and spot on in many aspects

Unfortunately the large majority of owners and breeders may well go ignored and uncounted as the industry, facing the threat of federal government involvement to outlaw race-day medications, attempts to deal with the most debilitating of all its current problems — a drug culture image among fans and bettors alike.

Derby runner-up Nehro pulled from Preakness Stakes – Thoroughbred Times
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2011/05/17/derby-runner-up-nehro-pulled-from-preakness-stakes.aspx

Zayat Stable’s Nehro has been ruled out of Saturday’s Preakness Stakes (G1) and the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) runner-up will instead be pointed to the Belmont Stakes (G1).

After serious deliberation, owner Ahmed Zayat elected to skip the Preakness rather than have the Mineshaft colt race for a fourth time in eight weeks. Nehro also finished second in the Louisiana Derby (G2) on March 26 and Arkansas Derby (G2) on April 16.
