One year of hopes, no more than ninety seconds to make the dream come true. Ten jockeys, dressed in the representative colors of their contrade, riding bareback on magnificent horses, while citizens on the bleachers scream with pride

Wow. Pin us, trainer of the first Belmont winner, Finian, sounds like a real class act  we could use more men like him in this modern racing game

The owner of the horse — will it be Derby-winner Animal Kingdom, Preakness-winner Shackleford or a 30-to-1 longshot? — who takes this year’s Belmont Stakes on Saturday will hoist an ornate trophy high. Made by Tiffany from glittering silver, the bowl and cover are topped with detailed oak leaves and a proud figure of a thoroughbred named Fenian.

The Jewish trainer Jacob Pincus saddled Fenian for the Belmont, and the resulting victory helped make Pincus the leading trainer of 1869. “Leading trainer” was just one in a series of Pincus’ many accomplishments. He also trained Iroquois, the first American-bred winner of England’s Epsom Derby in 1881. With that triumph, Pincus and Iroquois proved to the haughty British and French racing worlds that American thoroughbreds had arrived.

Article: Belmont Stakes lexicon, BANNED edition: Let’s can the stamina talk

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Yes!  I’m getting really tired of the clichės!

Belmont Stakes lexicon, BANNED edition: Let’s can the stamina talk
http://blog-beb.thoroughbredtimes.com/2011/06/belmont-stakes-lexicon-banned-edition.html

I had so much fun in spring 2010  writing a paean to the terms I wanted banished from the Kentucky Derby lexicon (e.g. “weak crop”) that I thought I’d do the same for the Belmont Stakes this year.
If spring is when a young man’s fancy turns to love, then Belmont Stakes week is when an old Turf writer’s curmudgeonly ways turns to disdain, and Ray Kerrison of the New York Post began the litany on Monday by describing the third jewel of American Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown as “the last surviving pillar of the days when horses were bred and prized for stamina.”
Now banned from my Belmont Stakes lexicon (unless used in a quote by someone I’m interviewing for a story) is the word stamina.

Illegal medication and what to do about it is buzzing again, with the arrival of hot weather.

Racing Commissioners International want furosemide (aka Salix or Lasix) on race day banned in five years.

Rep. Ed Whitfield from Kentucky and Sen. Tom Udall from New Mexico have introduced federal legislation to end the use of performance-enhancing drugs in horse racing.
