In spite of rainy weather and muddy track conditions, a crowd of 55,779 wagered $10,098,573 on Belmont Stakes Day races, a 32.9% increase over $7,598,840 in 2010, the New York Racing Association reported June

NEW YORK — Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom nearly fell at the start. Preakness Stakes
winner Shackleford faded in the stretch. The Belmont Stakes was up for grabs.

And it was 24-1 long shot Ruler On Ice who delivered a huge upset Saturday in the final leg of the Triple Crown, splashing his way to a three-quarter-length victory over Stay Thirsty in a slow 2 minutes, 30.88 seconds.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Light rain is falling, and the track is sloppy at Belmont Park at 7:34 a.m. EDT, about 11 hours before the Belmont Stakes will be run.

The National Weather Service forecast says there’s a 50 percent chance of rain today. It’s too early to tell if there will be an off track for the race.

Having been to Belmont on many Belmont Stakes days, I can wholeheartedly recommend it.  Belmont is majestic and a reminder if the glory days of racing.

New York City Racing Association officials are “hopeful” that the Belmont Stakes will draw around 60,000 people this year. Some perspective: When Smarty Jones ran for the Triple Crown in 2004, twice as many crammed the racetrack. Tucked into a modest Daily Racing Form story about crowd predictions is this comment from Charles Hayward, president of the NYRA: “I still think there’s 3,000 to 5,000 people that are going to come out as a result of the closure of New York City OTB.” When you’re pinning your attendance hopes on 3,000 former OTB diehards, it’s an off year.

Belmont Day Could be a Wet One
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/63512/belmont-day-could-be-a-wet-one

If the forecast is correct, Saturday’s Belmont Stakes (gr. I) could be run over a wet track, a factor that will be considered by many handicappers.

One day after racing was canceled June 9 at Belmont Park—with the high temperature reaching 92 degrees—the National Weather Service was forecasting a 60% chance of rain the night of June 10, with showers and a few thunderstorms.

When injections of furosemide and doses of aminocaproic acid to control exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage are given to starters in the 143rd Belmont Stakes Saturday, it might be the last time an American Triple Crown race will ever be run on legal performance-enhancing drugs.

ELMONT — After Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, three horses will have run in all three legs of the Triple Crown. So far, only one, Mucho Macho Man, has nothing to show for it.

“Shackleford (Preakness) won his and Animal Kingdom won his (Kentucky Derby). Now it’s our turn,” Mucho Macho Man’s trainer Kathy Ritvo said while watching her colt get a bath at Belmont Park early Thursday morning. “He deserves to win one of these races.”

Mucho Macho Man is 10-1 on the Belmont morning line. After finishing a solid third in the Kentucky Derby (beaten by a neck for second by Nehro), Mucho Macho Man was sixth in the Preakness (beaten by 71/2 lengths). That would explain his inflated odds in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Good story:  I’m rooting for you, Tom!

Belmont Win Would be Special for Albertrani

Tom Albertrani has done just about everything around a racetrack—walk hots, groom, exercise horses, and ride them in the afternoons. He has found his real calling, however, as a trainer. And June 11, he hopes to fill in a gap in his local New York resume when he sends Brilliant Speed out to contest the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

Time off after Kentucky Derby may work in Nehro’s favor for Belmont Stakes
http://www.nola.com/horseracing/index.ssf/2011/06/time_off_after_kentucky_derby.html

Recent Belmont Stakes history supports their decision.

In the past five Belmonts, none of the winners came out of the Preakness. Three of those Belmont winners, including Drosselmeyer last year, were debuting in the Triple Crown series. The other two — Summer Bird in 2009 and Jazil in 2006 — ran in the Derby but didn’t run in the Preakness.
