From Bloodhorse, a good news story for value investors. A serial win wager with only a 14% takeout. Assuming 8 horse fields, the random odds are about 32,000 to one, but still , the takeout's only 14%

Here's the five-bar version: After receiving approval from the California Horse Racing Board and the Thoroughbred Owners of California, Hollywood Park will offer a reduced takeout Pick 5 on its wagering menu when the Spring/Summer meet begins April 21.

The Pick 5, which will have the lowest takeout rate for any multiple race wager in California at 14%, will be a 50-cent minimum bet. It will consist of the first five races daily.

Pair of horse racing bills signed by NJ governor – BusinessWeek

Pair of horse racing bills signed by NJ governor

TRENTON, N.J.

Gov. Chris Christie signed a pair of bills Monday aimed at aiding New Jersey’s struggling horse racing industry.

One gives racetracks and casinos the ability to accept more advance wagers on simulcast races.

Another allows standardbred permit holders at the Meadowlands Racetrack and Freehold Raceway to shorten the season to a minimum of 75 dates. That’s down from 141 at the Meadowlands and 168 at Freehold.

The laws are the latest in a series enacted by New Jersey lawmakers responding to Christie’s directive that horse racing be forced to become a self-sustaining entity that does not receive any government subsidies.

In a related development Monday, the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority announced it will begin negotiations with real estate developer Morris Bailey for the private leasing of the Monmouth Park thoroughbred racetrack in Oceanport. Bailey is the founder of two real estate development firms and in December purchased Resorts Atlantic City. He is also a horse owner and breeder.

Meadowlands Racetrack needs much more than a new owner – NorthJersey.com

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

From NorthJersey.com, another sobering look at thoroughbred horse betting today:

On the TV screen above a row of betting windows, a horse named Phat Boy gallops in the mud of a faraway racetrack. Across the room, a man in a gray sweat shirt that proclaims "Elmwood Park Football" exhorts another horse on another TV screen in another part of America to "come on … come on … come on … aw … come … on."

Bettors at The Meadowlands Racetrack on Friday checking TV monitors showing races at other tracks.

This is what constitutes life now at The Meadowlands Racetrack — a daily mingling of a few hundred bettors who show up to gaze and sometimes shout at almost 100 TV screens with horse races from almost every corner of the nation. Beyond a wall of windows, the Meadowlands track is empty of horses or jockeys, as real racing takes a hiatus until May, then returning with a reduced schedule because of less revenue and fewer fans.

The Jockey Club Supports RCI Medication Plan

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Ogden Mills Phipps, the chairman of The Jockey Club, said April 11 the organization supports the recent Association of Racing Commissioners International initiative to formulate a plan that would eliminate the use of medication in horses competing in races.

I admire Mr. Phipps’s position on this issue! Medication on race day is a risk to the horses’ health and the sport!
