Horse racing needs to get a job.

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Brendan O'Meara has done an article about the state of horse racing. It's pretty controversial, but really well written. Here are some excerpts, the full article from horseraceinsider.com can be read at the link below:

Horse racing needs to get a job.

Horse racing has been living in its mother’s basement blogging about video games and belly button lint too long. Horse racing’s gut hangs over its stained tighty-whities. It hasn’t shaved in weeks.

Mom calls down asking how it’s doing but not really wanting to know how it’s feeling but rather why it hasn’t seen the sun and eaten anything not packaged by Frito-Lay. Pull your own weight! Pay a bill! Put on a shirt!…

In this Choose Your Own Adventure there are two options worth considering to find gainful employment for horse racing. If it is so concerned about money and the un-welfare of its athletes and bettors then quit, yes, you, quit. Turn to the last page: THE END.

Option No. 2—if you have more hope than Pandora—join the Betting Embargo brought to you by The Carryover! And what better statement could be made than by sticking it right to the heart of horse racing and Kentucky? Don’t bet the Derby. Not a dime. Not one freaking penny. So, you like To Honor and Serve? Honor and serve your game by getting the brass to notice by putting your money on two—no three!—Grilled Stuft Burritos instead of Uncle Mo (sorry Mr. Repole, oh, valiant silver lining).

Lone Star Unveils Two New Wagering Options

Bloodhorse.com Reports Lone Star Unveils Two New Wagering Options

Bettors will have two new wagering options to consider—the 10-cent Super Hi-5, and the 10-cent Fortune 6—when Lone Star Park in Texas kicks off its Thoroughbred meet April 14. The Fortune 6 will have a low takeout of 12%.

The Super Hi-5 is a 10-cent minimum wager that requires bettors to correctly select the first five finishers of a race in exact order. When a winning combination is not sold, all money wagered carries over to the next race where Super Hi-5 wagering is offered. Super Hi-5 wagering will be available on the final race of every program in races with at least seven betting interests.

The 10-cent Fortune 6 is a multiple-race wager requiring bettors to correctly designate the winner of six consecutive races. The entire net Fortune 6 pool and carryover will only be distributed to the holder of a unique 10-cent winning wager. When there are multiple winners, 60% of the pool will be shared equally, while 40% of the pool goes into the jackpot carryover.  When there is no unique 10-cent wager selecting the first place finisher in all Fortune 6 races, 60% of the pool will be distributed to those who selected the most winners, and 40% of the pool will carry over. The Fortune 6 is offered daily and will comprise the final six races.

Also new on the wagering menu for the 2011 Thoroughbred season are 50-cent rolling Pick 3s, previously offered as a $2 wager.

A Tote Wagering System For Everyone?

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off
Fairgrounds_11

The bloodhorse blog has a very interesting post by Fred Pope. He proposes a unified tote system. I’m not sure if I like all of the implications of that proposal. But, what’s significant is that there is a recognition of the issue of bettor confidence in the thoroughbred parimutuel racing.

Here’s an excerpt from the article dealing with that:

The Problem
We have a similar problem with our totes, which process wagers. The totalizator network consists of three private companies that do not seem to work well with each other. One example is called “past-posting,” where bets continue to be made after the races start.

If the integrity of the wager is in question, bettors quit. The tracks say past-posting may be fixed in a couple years, although compliance will be optional. But even if that problem is solved, the downward trend in racing gives private tote companies little incentive to invest in new technology. That’s a problem when technology is moving so fast.

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Thoroughbred Times reported on this today: Should prove to be a very interesting report on August 14th.

The Jockey Club has hired a global consulting company to conduct a comprehensive study of the current state of Thoroughbred racing and breeding and the future potential for growth in both areas.

New York-based global consulting management group McKinsey & Company will conduct the study. The Jockey Club has provided the company with a list of key individuals in the industry that can offer insight into the issues and opportunities in the sport.

The study is outlined in a letter written by Jockey Club President Jim Gagliano. According to the letter, the study will focus on economic and consumer issues as well as international opportunities for expansion and ways to increase the popularity of the sport.

The findings and recommendations of the study will be presented at The Jockey’s Club’s Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing on August 14 in Saratoga Springs, New York.

From bloodhorse.com:

During a meeting with the California Horse Racing Board March 14, Hollywood Park made it clear that it wants to remain a part of the racing calendar at least through 2012.

The 238-acre track site is under threat of a large-scale commercial and residential build-out already approved by the city of Inglewood. Track president Jack Liebau previously stated Hollywood's intention to operate through the end of next year as it awaits a turnaround in the economy that would it allow it to proceed with plans to bulldoze the facility.

Santa Anita Paddock Guard Shear injured while saving young girl

Shear was hospitalized after protecting a young girl from a loose horse (Benoit Photos)

Veteran Santa Anita Paddock Guard John Shear was injured Saturday as he threw himself in front of a young girl in order to protect her from a loose horse, prior to the running of the 3RD race.

Shear, a former jockey who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, has been a fixture at Santa Anita for decades. Prior to the incident, he was in his normal position holding the rope on the west entrance of the track’s walking ring.

Sea and Sage (Sea of Secrets), a three-year-old gelding who had started twice previously at the current meet, was in the walking ring with nine other horses who were readying for the upcoming race. Sea and Sage wheeled, freeing himself from his handler and in a 180-degree about-face, sprinted toward the opening Shear was guarding just outside the walking ring.

As seen live on simulcast television, Shear, instead of dropping the perimeter rope he was holding and protecting himself, ran in front of the loose horse and threw himself in front of and on top of the young girl in the crowd, who appeared to be three or four years of age.

Sea and Sage collided with Shear, who remained conscious, responsive and was moving when he was attended to by on-site First Aid personnel and later by members of the City of Arcadia Fire Department.
