Preakness 2011 Back On Schedule For The Time Being

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Preakness back on schedule. For now…

From the gazette.net, a Maryland business community website:

It was a picture of harmony at Laurel Park that said it all: officials of the Maryland Jockey Club, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Maryland Horse Breeders' Association sitting together before the Maryland Racing Commission, as the commission approved a deal to save Maryland thoroughbred racing for 2011. New (Old) Santa Anita Dirt Surface Survives Latest Storm

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

It's been raining like heck here in Vegas, and we just got a respite today. The whole West Coast has been pounded by storms. Santa Anita's new/old dirt surface has done quite well in spite of the rain. Maybe this 'horses running on dirt for thousands of years' thing has some merit!

From bloodhorse.com: Despite being pounded by rain for a fourth consecutive day, Santa Anita's new natural dirt main track opened for training with sunshine and partly cloudy skies on the morning of Dec. 23.

No Preakness In 2011?

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

This would be unspeakably bad for thoroughbred racing. From bloodhorse.com

There still is no live racing schedule for 2011 in Maryland after a Dec. 21 meeting of the Maryland Racing Commission.

The commission met for four hours to discuss the situation even though an official application for 2011 racing dates wasn't on the agenda. Officials said no decision was reached on dates. Thoroughbred Times Reports Hollywood Handle Down 4.3 percent

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

What concerns me is that the decision makers in California, faced with falling handle, have decided to INCREASE the takeout on certain bets. This makes absolutely no sense. And what's worse, they then attempted to spin it as being better for the bettor. Humbug, I say. Here's what the Thoroughbred Times reported today:

The autumn Hollywood Park meeting saw a 4.3% drop in overall average daily handle to $7.8-million when it wrapped up 31 days of racing on Sunday.

The meet also saw a 2.1% decline in average daily on-track handle while average daily on-track attendance fell slightly, down 0.7% compared with last year. The meet lost some handle when track officials cancelled the final Sunday card, December 19, after two races because of excessive rain. From AP: Wagering at Remington Park rises 48.3 percent

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Hello! Thoroughbred Race Tracks! How about modeling what Remington Park is doing to increase handle? Big fields, good purses, wide open races, I may be speculating here but as an investor, these are the things that attract me to RP. Well done, Mr. Wells, well done

From the Associated Press:

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Track officials say that total wagering on Remington Park thoroughbred racing in 2010 rose by 48.3 percent from last year.

Scott Wells, the track's president and general manager, says almost $54.2 million was wagered on Remington Park races during the thoroughbred meet that ended Saturday. Track officials say the large increase is a result of higher interest from bettors receiving the track's export signal away from Oklahoma City. NJ Approves Exchange and Internet Wagering

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

The New Jersey Assembly Dec. 13 passed a bill to authorize exchange wagering on results of in-state and out-of-state horse races. It also would allow Internet wagering by out-of-state residents on horse racing.

A big hooray to New Jersey and Governor Christie. Hopefully other racing jurisdictions will follow!

From today's bloodhorse.com and Philadelphia Inquirer:

Exchange wagering is a form of betting in which two or more people place opposing wagers on the outcome of a horse race. Exchange wagering allows a bettor to wager on a selected outcome occurring and another bettor to wager on that same outcome not occurring. It is popular in Great Britain and Australia.

The Assembly also passed measures that would allow Internet wagering by out-of-state residents on horse racing; expand off-track wagering; allow racetrack permit-holders to provide a single pari-mutuel pool for each horse race; and allow casinos and out-of-state racetracks to negotiate the amount casinos pay for simulcast races. A package of bills to help revive New Jersey's struggling horse racing industry won final approval from the state Assembly Monday, as did legislation to boost gambling revenues by allowing sports betting at the state's casinos and racetracks.

Passage of the Democratic-driven bills sets the stage for Gov. Christie's proposed overhaul of Atlantic City gambling and horse racing. The Republican governor announced a sweeping plan on July 21 to turn both industries' flagging fortunes around. Last month, Atlantic City's 11 casinos reported a 12.5 percent revenue drop compared with a year ago. Biting The Hand…Some harsh comments from vice chair of CHRB

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off
From Bill Christie:

The maligned speaker makes some valid points, but perhaps tweaked a few noses while doing so:

You have to be prepared at all times for what might happen in the desert. Field Marshal Rommel and Lawrence of Arabia knew this, in spades. But anything can still happen–in "Road to Morocco," Dorothy Lamour even fell in love with Bob Hope while Bing Crosby was around. No amount of preparation could have girded us, however, for what David Israel recently said in the desert, at the University of Arizona's annual industry brain-pick. Several cacti, not to mention some superannuated horseplayers, were aghast. "The average age of our on-track customer is deceased," said Israel, vice chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, and then he went on to say, "And the average age of our satellite customer is decomposed."

One Of The Stupidest Things Ever Said About Horse Racing And The Takeout

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

From the Daily Racing Form, this particularly clueless lead for an article entitled:" California officials hope takeout increase will lead to larger fields."

Hoo boy, this should be good, I thought.

Didn't take long, in fact one sentence. Hang onto your hats, boys and girls, this is a doozie:

TUCSON, Ariz. – California racing officials stressed on Thursday that a takeout increase on exotic wagers that is scheduled to go into effect on Dec. 26 was supported only out of necessity, in the hopes that it would drive up field size and present a better wagering product to horseplayers.

Are you serious?

Taking more out of a bet will present a BETTER WAGERING PRODUCT TO HORSEPLAYERS?

I don't know if it's a lack of understanding of the take, or parimutuel wagering, or some form of psychotropic drug, but this has got to rate as one of the stupidest statements I've seen in a long time about horse racing and wagering.

I am seriously considering a moratorium on betting California exotic bets. And not just for the extra takeout. But to punish such a lack of respect to the horseplayers, we who keep this game going. And, yes, to punish idiocy.

AP Reports Jockey Valdes to Plead Guilty in Race-Fixing Case

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

I say throw the book at him!

From the Associated Press: Lawyers say a Florida jockey charged in Detroit with conspiring to fix horse races plans to plead guilty.

Assistant U.S. Attorney David Morris in Detroit says he has a plea deal with Ricardo Valdes of Ocala, Florida. Defense lawyer Brian Russell acknowledged it while participating in a court hearing by telephone Dec. 8.

Valdes was charged last year with conspiring with two Detroit-area businessmen to influence the outcome of some horse races, including races at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida and Delaware Downs in Delaware in 2005 and 2006. The races were simulcast at Michigan tracks.

There was no indication when Valdes will appear in Detroit federal court to plead guilty.
