Bloodhorse Reports Jersey Handle Up 123% Despite 50% Fewer Dates

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Good news for thoroughbred racing, not just in New Jersey: Will other jurisdictions catch on that bettors would rather full fields and good opportunities for value wagering?

From Bloodhorse.com:

The consolidation of Thoroughbred racing at Monmouth Park this year led to a $123 million increase in total pari-mutuel handle despite 50% fewer racing dates, New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority officials said Nov. 21.

Monmouth completed its 22-day late summer/early fall meet Nov. 21 with average daily handle of $3,841,848. The comparable 47-day meet at Meadowlands in 2009 produced average daily handle of $1,342,884, the NJSEA said. Churchill unveils official artwork for 2011 Derby, Oaks

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

From The Thoroughbred Times:

Artist Lesley Humphrey called painting the official artwork for next year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) an honor on par with meeting Queen Elizabeth II.

Churchill Downs commissioned the Texas resident to paint separate pieces of art for Thoroughbred racing’s two most attended events.

The Derby piece is entitled “Victory” and, according to a Churchill press release, features “a dappled gray horse of majestic stature. The jubilant jockey is fierce in his winning expression.” For the rest of the article: http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/national-news/2010/november/17/kentucky-derby-oaks-churchill-art.aspx

MacBook Air, iPad, or Both?

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

This article pretty much sums up my thinking on having both an iPad and MBA 11". There are things at which each excels, and there is not that much overlap. I love reading with iBooks or Good Reader on the iPad, as much as more as paper and ink books. Checking RSS on the iPad with Reeder is so much more intuitive than on the computer. Most of my emails can be handled, except when I need to do a longer response, or as I'm doing here, a Posterous post with attachments. I have done that with the iPad, but feel more comfortable with a screen and keyboard. Will be going on a trip for the holidays, and will definitely bring the MacBook Air, don't know yet if I'll take the iPad, but right now I'm leaning to do just that: their weight together is about half my big MacBook Pro with the cover.

Here's the article from The Brooks Review:

Redux – Mobile Working Thoughts

Sunday, after a long weekend down in Oregon, I was having lunch with friends and one asked whether I had gotten the new MacBook Air yet. When I told him that I did get it, he asked why I needed an iPad still. A question that I was short on answers.

The logic he was using is sound, an iPad and MacBook Air are both very mobile machines and since the MacBook Air is more powerful and almost as mobile why would I need both an iPad and MacBook Air. At least this is what I assume to be the logic that he was using.

The answer though is not straightforward, I don’t need both, yet at the same time I do need both. It is massively confusing, not just for people who look at my setup, but for me as well. Breeders Cup Tickets 11/5/10 Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Stakes

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

Well, the two investments I thought would run well in the first day of the 2010 Breeders' Cup did what they were supposed to: run late. Unfortunately, they did not get up to win, although finishing with good energy and some of my investment money on their noses. Sweet August Moon in the 7th got off to an horrendous start, and managed to finish with a rush to get 5th at 39-1.

However, a horse second on the line in Black Magic: The Ultimate Handicapper Software™ in the 9th race, the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf Stakes, the 5, shared account, got up to pay $94 dollars to win. Strictly a 'mental health' investment, given the number of unknowns in the race, I hit the all button in the exacta, and the heavy favorite finished second (Midday at 4/5). It just nosed out 32-1 Keertana, and that would have been a huge exacta. As it was, the exacta came back $295.20

From USA Today: After Synthetics Movement, Dirt Again On The Comeback Track

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

From USA Today:
By Tom Pedulla, USA TODAY
LOUISVILLE — When the Breeders' Cup World Championships were contested on synthetic surfaces each of the last two years atSanta Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., it appeared the quality and safety of that racing might provide increasing momentum in the direction of synthetics.

But the winds of change might be shifting again as the Breeders' Cup moves to tradition-rich Churchill Downs this weekend with 14 races worth $26 million. For the rest of the article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/horses/breeders/2010-11-03-dirt-on-the-comeback-track_N.htm

Legality of exchange wagering debated

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

From northjersey.com a debate is going on about the legality of exchange wagering. Interesting debate legally, but there are many ways of reading the Federal law, and if the state legislatures have the will, they may just find a way.

State Sen. Ray Lesniak, D-Union, said Thursday that a proposed new form of betting on horse racing in New Jersey is illegal under current federal law — but he supports passage of a bill including exchange wagering anyway.
Horse racing advocates and BetFair — a British company that runs exchange wagering in England — for months have been advocating to make New Jersey the first state to bring the new betting to the United States.

Horse racing advocates and BetFair — a British company that runs exchange wagering in England — for months have been advocating to make New Jersey the first state to bring the new betting to the United States.

“We’re not going to back down — we’re going to move forward and make sure that the horse racing industry survives and that Atlantic City gets a boost as well,” Lesniak said.

But Barbara DeMarco, a lobbyist for the state’s thoroughbred horsemen, said the group has received a legal opinion that exchange wagering is legal. She added that California signed an exchange wagering bill into law earlier this year, with the betting to begin in 2012, “so the precedent has already been set.”

Exchange Wagering Coming To New Jersey?

in Uncategorized by Michael Pizzolla Comments are off

This has been a popular form of betting through Betfair for awhile, and it may be coming to the states at last. It has the potential of opening many different 'non-traditional' wagering options. Stay tuned! From northjersey.com:

N.J. may try new way to bet on horses to help tracks – NorthJersey.com

Imagine being able to bet on a horse race even while the horses are on the backstretch — or being able to wager on a photo finish while it's being reviewed.

Such options already exist in Europe, and some of them may be coming to New Jersey next year. State officials aren't quite ready to make the full leap, but facing the potential collapse of its horse racing industry, New Jersey is likely to become the first state to take a dramatic step in that direction.

The new form of betting is called "exchange wagering," which is appropriate, because the concept is reminiscent of the stock market — with many bettors acting like traders.
