Here’s a video podcast I did for the Wizards’ ValueCapping™ Forum.
This podcast explores what is the biggest difference between the professional level investor at the races versus the approach of the hobbyist.
I hope you enjoy the podcast. Waiting for your spots, waiting for a good opportunity, developing a feel so that the bet makes you is vital.

ValueCappers, Handicappers, Horseplayers, pay attention. The take on trifectas at Woodbine has been lowered TO 25%. The headline sound's great, a reduction in takeout. And then you look at the numbers. You MUST get value when playing trifectas:
From bloodhorse: Woodbine Entertainment Group announced that the takeout on its triactor (trifecta) wager by 2% for the upcoming live Thoroughbred meet that begins April 2 at the Toronto, Canada track.
The “tri,” a bet in which fans are asked to pick the top three finishers in a race, is one of the more popular wagers at the track. It will now feature a takeout, which is the amount of money kept by the track before the winning bettors are paid off, of 25%.
The takeout reduction is the second in less than two years. The rate was at 28.3%, before a cut in 2009 dropped the mark to 27%. The 25% takeout includes 5.3% in provincial and federal taxes and levies.

The National Handicapping Championship will return to the Las Vegas Strip at least for the next two years, as the National Thoroughbred Racing Association reached an agreement with Treasure Island to play host to the event in 2012 and 2013.
The move to Treasure Island coincides with an expected largest purse ever for the event, expected to be worth $2-million overall with $1-million for the winner. The event could attract 500 players, up from 301 at the 2011 NHC at Red Rocks. (sic)

Yes, Kegasus. He's a half-horse, half-man with a prominent beer gut being touted as "Part champion Thoroughbred, part infield fan and all party manimal" and he'll be featured in the Maryland Jockey Club's marketing campaign for the 136th running of the Preakness Stakes. From a report in the Thoroughbred Times, report that Jean Cruguet, yes Jean Cruguet, is riding at Keeneland. A tribute to his late wife, and earnings going to charity, what a great story. I watched Jean ride Seattle Slew to his Belmont, the third jewel of his Triple Crown.
From Thoroughbred Times:
As a Triple Crown winner, Jean Cruguet already holds a distinction few jockeys can claim.
Next month, Cruguet hopes to do something no jockey has ever done.
The 72-year-old Cruguet, who piloted Seattle Slew to a Triple Crown sweep in 1977, says he intends to honor his wife by riding a horse for trainer Jean Paul Pucet on April 27 at Keeneland Race Course.
Cruguet will ride Ratoath Special, a bay Include filly, in a starter allowance sprint for three-year-old fillies.
“I will be very disappointed if I do not win that race,” said Cruguet, who lives in Versailles, Kentucky. For the rest of the article: http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2011/04/01/cruguet-to-ride-at-keeneland.aspx
Cruguet said that on that day riders will be asked to donate a share of their earnings to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, and he intends to contribute everything he makes to the charity.

From the Whittier Daily News, some very sobering statistics concerning Santa Anita's handle:
According to figures taken from Equibase, Santa Anita's total handle was down $77.1 million, or 17.7 percent, from a year ago heading into Wednesday's card. If the current trend continues, the track's all-sources handle could show a decline of more than $100 million for the 2010-11 meet

Thank heavens! The Federal Government is here to help! Not to be cynical, but I can't remember the last time government involvement with a wagering business had a happy outcome. Sigh. From bloodstock:
