Interesting article on discretionary income and gaming.  I tend to agree with the writer’s take on alternate games, like slots, to bail out racing, rather than address the underlying issues

Risk Aversion Still Apparent In Consumer Spending Figures | Markets | Minyanville.com

As a former writer/editor/handicapper at Daily Racing Form, I argued vehemently within the industry in numerous articles and editorials for the industry to avoid pursuing alternative gaming. The reason was simple: if the market is rejecting the product, then subsidizing it by siphoning off revenues from unrelated alternative gaming sources (slots, poker, etc.) will create a false economy that masks the decline, thus ensuring that the inevitable bust destroys more than it has any natural right to destroy. Eventually, the market forces take over and, one way or another, force closure. New York City Off-Track Betting, undoubtedly one of the worst, most mismanaged operations in the history of all of gaming, finally closed late last year.

Another highly regarded horse is possibly out of the 2011 Run For The Roses…

Kentucky Derby favorite Uncle Mo might be a no-go – Chicago Sun-Times

NEW YORK (AP) — Uncle Mo has a gastrointestinal infection and may be a no-go for the Kentucky Derby on May 7.

The early Derby favorite lost for the first time in the Wood Memorial on Saturday at Aqueduct, finishing third as the prohibitive 1-10 betting choice.

The 2-year-old champion was given blood tests on Tuesday after his poor performance, and veterinarians discovered the infection. Trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole were told Uncle Mo could continue training while undergoing treatment.

Foaling Dates of Derby Contenders

Watchmegocd042911_2ae298

I'm just not sure how relevant all of this is, but part of the Kentucky Derby pre race speculation seems to always include when the various horses were actually born, as opposed to their attributed birthday of January 1st. For what it's worth…

Foaling Dates of Derby Contenders
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/62819/foaling-dates-of-derby-contenders

All North American Thoroughbreds share New Year’s Day, Jan. 1 as the date they officially become a year older according to The Jockey Club. But very few Thoroughbred foals are delivered Jan. 1, or even in the first week of January for that matter.

Only one of the top 20 contenders for the May 7 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) was a January foal, that distinction belonging to Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) winner Watch Me Go.  This year’s Derby elder was foaled in Florida Jan. 23, 2008. Only four of the contenders are February foals. Three of the last seven Derby winners were foaled in February: 2004 winner Smarty Jones

(Feb. 28); ’05 winner Giacomo   (Feb. 17); and ’07 winner Street Sense   (Feb. 23).

Last year’s winner, WinStar Farm’s homebred Super Saver   was foaled March 8.

Of this year’s contenders, two will not have reached their actual third birthday by Derby day. Twice the Appeal was a foaled May 10, 2008 and Mucho Macho Man is the baby of the bunch being a June 15 foal. Mine That Bird, the 50-1 upset winner of the 2009 Derby was not yet 3 when he won, being a May 10 foal.

Derby Kitten Gets in, Ramsey Overjoyed

“Derby headquarters here!” exclaimed Ken Ramsey as he answered the phone minutes after finding out his Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. III) winner Derby Kitten

secured a spot in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) starting gate. Derby Kitten moved from No. 21 to No. 20 on the all-important graded stakes earnings list with the defection of Wood Memorial (gr. I) winner Toby's Corner

.

The gregarious Kentucky owner could not contain his enthusiasm for making it back to his home state’s signature event for the second year in a row.

Toby’s Corner withdrawn from Kentucky Derby – Thoroughbred Times
http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/racing-news/2011/05/03/tobys-corner-derby-kitten.aspx

Dianne Cotter’s homebred Toby’s Corner was withdrawn from consideration for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) after trainer H. Graham Motion described the colt as being “off” in his left behind.

Winner of the Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) and Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct this season, Motion had trained Toby’s Corner at his Fair Hill base in Maryland. He sent the colt to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center for tests Monday night. Tests did not reveal any injury, but when the colt did not improve by Tuesday, Motion declared him from the Derby.

President Obama personally uses a range of technological devices, and had previously acknowledged that he had an iPad (though he continues to prefer a Blackberry for his smartphone), as well as a MacBook Pro and various other iOS devices. It’s also known that his children have their own MacBooks.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – While many Americans celebrate the death of Osama Bin Laden, security is a top issues. The Morning Line: Slow, Slower, Slowest at the 2011 Kentucky Derby – NYTimes.com
http://therail.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/02/the-morning-line-slow-slower-slowest/

The quality of the Not Ready for First Saturday in May Players is mocked by Ray Kerrison in the New York Post, who states, “The slowest bunch of horses in 20 years are set to go in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, turning America’s greatest horse race into a bettor’s dream or, depending on your luck, nightmare.” Ed McNamara for Newsday has similar questions about the field. He writes: “Saturday will bring Derby No. 137, and if you think you have a sure thing after a bizarre series of prep races, you’re either a genius or delusional. If you bet the favorite in the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass and the Santa Anita, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and Illinois Derbys, you went 0-for-7.”

Do Horses Recognize Their People?
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/62810/do-horses-recognize-their-people

Does a horse respond differently to “his person” as opposed to a stranger? The results of a recent French study indicate that horses use auditory and visual information to recognize specific people, and that they expect certain behaviors from those people based on previous experience.
