When Derby Kitten pulled an upset in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland April 23, owner-breeder Ken Ramsey did not have Derby on his mind despite the ambitious name he had given the colt.

“When Derby Kitten crossed the finish line, there was no Derby thrill at all. I had no idea we were close to getting in,” said the owner of Ramsey Farm near Nicholasville, Ky. “I came home and checked. We were 31st on the list (of graded earnings) after the Coolmore Lexington.”

As the month played out, though, casualties and common sense began altering the Kentucky Derby picture. Then, on May 3, the magic 20 spot opened for Derby Kitten with the withdrawal of an injured Toby's Corner.

Owner Mike Repole will consult with a trio of veterinarians plus trainer Todd Pletcher before deciding whether champion Uncle Mo will start on Saturday in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

Uncle Mo has jogged twice since having his final Derby workout on Sunday, and Repole has said throughout the week that the Indian Charlie colt is only “50-50” to start in the classic. Uncle Mo suffered his first defeat when third as the 1-to-10 favorite in the Resorts World New York Casino Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) on April 9 at Aqueduct.

Does this mean he's not going to ride Animal Kingdom on Saturday? Sure hope he recovers quickly, and our thoughts go out to Robby and his family.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Jockey Robby Albarado was bleeding from the face after being thrown from a horse in the post parade before the third race Wednesday at Churchill Downs.

Albarado was taken to Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville.

“He’s got some facial lacerations, and they’re checking him out further,’’ said Dallas Stewart, who trains the horse, Smoke’n Al.

Albarado is to ride Animal Kingdom in the Kentucky Derby.

http://www.kentucky.com/2011/05/04/1730009/purses-up-betting-down-on-us-horse.html

Purses are on the rise but betting, perhaps hampered by foul April weather at racetracks, is still dropping, according to monthly figures released by Equibase.

Wagering last month was down 7.47 percent, or about $75 million, while purses rose 3.40 percent, or $2.8 million.

Year to date, wagering on U.S. races is down 8.22 percent or about $300 million from the same time period last year. Purses are up 4.75 percent year to date, or about $13 million.

Dialed In is poised to win the Kentucky Derby, trainer Nick Zito says | NOLA.com

Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia said he’s leaning toward making Dialed In a slight favorite over Uncle Mo in the Derby morning line, though Battaglia left open the possibility of changing his mind. The line will be revealed today at the post-position draw. The betting Saturday will determine the real odds.

To Zito, odds mean nothing. Performance is what matters. Dialed In has performed admirably since his racing career began.

Zito, a Hall of Fame trainer with five victories in Triple Crown races, knows what it takes to win the Derby. He won with Strike the Gold in 1991 and Go for Gin in 1994.
